3 Things I’ll Never Do at Animal Kingdom — From a Former Disney Cast Member
As a former Disney cast member, I’ve spent countless hours learning the ins and outs of the parks. And while I still love visiting as a guest, there are definitely a few things I’ve learned to avoid at all costs. If you’re planning a trip, here are three things I’ll never do at Animal Kingdom—and what I recommend instead.
1. I’ll Never Go Straight to Flight of Passage at Rope Drop
I get it. Avatar: Flight of Passage is one of the most popular rides in all of Walt Disney World. And it’s one of my favorite experiences at Animal Kingdom! But heading there first thing in the morning? Hard pass.
Here’s why: Animal Kingdom is often considered a "half-day park," which means a huge chunk of guests sprint straight to the big-ticket attractions as soon as the gates open. The result? A massive crowd surge and inflated wait times from the get-go.
Instead, I take the path less traveled—literally. I use the morning to hit other high-quality attractions like Expedition Everest, Dinosaur, or Kilimanjaro Safaris while the crowds are concentrated in Pandora. By the end of the day, when most people are park-hopping, I head to Flight of Passage—and usually with a much shorter wait.
2. I’ll Never Eat at a Standard Quick Service Spot
One of the best-kept secrets of Animal Kingdom? It's a foodie paradise. Forget the same-old burgers and chicken nuggets—this park is packed with bold flavors, global influences, and unique snacks you won’t find anywhere else on property.
Rather than defaulting to basic quick service meals, I plan my day around food. Think pineapple lumpia from Pongu Pongu, pulled pork mac and cheese from Eight Spoon Café, or a refreshing Night Blossom drink in Pandora. Even the sit-down options like Tusker House and Nomad Lounge offer incredible variety without breaking the bank.
My tip? Do a little research ahead of time and treat your snack stops like experiences, not afterthoughts.
3. I’ll Never Skip the Shows
Too many guests breeze past Animal Kingdom’s entertainment offerings—and they’re missing out big time. This park is home to some of the best live shows in all of Walt Disney World, hands down.
Festival of the Lion King is a Broadway-caliber spectacle with singing, dancing, and aerial acrobatics that’s guaranteed to give you chills. Finding Nemo: The Big Blue... and Beyond is charming, creative, and a welcome break from the heat. And don’t sleep on the street performances and animal encounters scattered around the park—they bring so much life and personality to your visit.
Trust me: the shows aren’t just filler. They’re some of the most memorable experiences you can have at Animal Kingdom.
Final Thoughts
Animal Kingdom isn’t just a “half-day park”—it’s an immersive, rich, and incredibly rewarding experience if you know how to do it right. Skip the early morning stampede, follow your nose (and taste buds), and don’t overlook the magic happening beyond the rides.
